Herring fillets in wine marinade.
Big jar. So flipping good. Oh my gawd. Stop me now. Big jar....... "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand." ~ Albert Einstein |

Damn, Jody.
I firmly believe that Lutefisk (notice the proper capitalization of the sacred name) is the Divine Fish Recipe that was given to our ancestors by the Great Fish Goddess. I will not be swayed in my conviction.

OMG Dianne
I LOVE herring fillets!!! never had them in wine marinade though - I love them pickled, and rolled up with lots of onions
Here in the UK they are called Roll Mops - and just talking about them is making my mouth water

I like the topic of happy food.
Mine: ice cream. I rarely treat myself to it though for some odd reason. Plenty of other stuff I like of course... Runnerup: peanut butter. |

Yes, Sam, pickled herring is a mouth watering subject. We get roll mops here too but the jar I bought yesterday is by far the best I have tried yet. Kosher.
(geez....I must renew my geneology search...) Anyways, I didn't finish the jar even though I wanted to - what I like about this brand is that all the stuff
I don't like is removed - things like the skin, bones, guts and fins are all gone. I don't much like picking fins from my teeth. And yep, these had the
onions added, too.
I was raised with a Norwegian cultural influence but my father (Cossack) loves pickled fish too (and salted and smoked). He makes his own pickled fish from Northern Pike that he catches. It is pretty good - at least it has passed my grandaughter's taste test. She, along with my son, has inherited the taste for pickled fish. She started raiding Grandma's fridge for the jars as soon as she was able to walk. It is not surprising because her father (my son) and I, when he was only 4 or 5 years of age, would buy a jar of pickled herrings and share it in one sitting. Speaking of smoked and salted fish - how do you feel about salted kippers? And have you ever tried the Chinese salted fish? Haha! Years ago, my Chinese mother-in-law had the whole town mad at her once. She dried and salted a large catch of Goldeye in her verandah one summer. Man, did that ever stink! You could smell it clear across town. (small town, mind you - but, how bad do you want it to get????) Ronnie, you had to bring up ice cream, didn't you? We had a fairly long thread once on that subject. oh, oh...... Peanut butter? Yep. Definitely in the running. On fresh bread with fresh sliced strawberries. Or made into cookies. With lots of peanuts. Dianne

I would give this a try too Dianne. What about the wine marinade though? I have allergies you know~
Otherwise, it sounds great....I like fish quite a bit. |

Yeah, Cookie, I am not surprised....I would make a guess that ALL food is a favorite! heehee
Curry....sometimes. Eh. But, I would share, Danielle! "Pepperocinis" Wazzat? Sounds medical..... teehee *eats another herring* *smack* *smack* "What about the wine marinade though? I have allergies you know~ " Hmmm...okay....*checks jar* It lists 'wine' as an ingredient....but it doesn't list an alcohol content. Hmmmmm.....kosher. Kosher wine? Eh....my pa used to buy that for the memorial. Okay. Ronnie, I have never gotten drunk eating these. Not that I am aware of. I would think that the alcohol content is reduced through the heating process. Alcohol does that. Hmmmm..... Marijuana, on the other hand, needs to be heated, I believe, or so I have been told, above 325 degrees F in order to release its properties. Hmmmmm.... "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Happy food? My favourite food of all would have to be apples! Healthy I know ... but I love them! Red, Green ... doesn't matter so long as they're
crunchy and have flavour!
Happy food that's NOT so good for me but I still love ... potato chips (as in crisps) and Vitawheat biscuits with butter and Vegemite! Yum! |

Yep! Vegemite is a MUST HAVE in our home! I've was going to try Promite but it literally turned my stomach when my friend (she's a big fan of Promite)
just opened the lid! Vegemite rocks!

Well this post is nicely balanced, was just about to go and plunder the fridge, when I read about pickled lamb tongues.
Speaking of pickled herring, rollmopses, and stuff like that. You guys should, if you ever get to holland, try a regular herring. It's almost tradition here to eat them raw, and no matter how gross it sounds, they taste wonderful! Really recommend it God did not create the universe, think about it. Bad lighting; planets too distant; pestered with comets; feeble contrivance; could make a better universe

Hmmm, my happy food would have to be either curry (Thai, Indian, doesn't matter) or sushi. Sushi's close (sort of, but not really) to herring, raw or
otherwise.
