I was so obedient. That's how brainwashed I was too. I remember the drama at the convention where the jw family is in a fatal car crash and they are immediately catapulted into the new system and what they had to deal with there. Remember that drama? Well, I don't think that it's much of a stretch to picture the gb ordering all jws to drink poisoned koolaid to catapult them all into the new system. I was wondering how many here think they would have drank the koolaid when they were jws. It does embarrass me a bit to admit this, but to me it just shows the power of the wt and its brainwashing. After all, we would have been willing to die without a blood transfusion. I've even had the gall to look at the Jonestown people in Guyana and thought what morons they were to willingly do that, but I have to say that I too would have if the gb told me to when I was still a jw robot. Too sad! And like Jonestown, would the gb just start shooting those who don't cooperate? It would not surprise me a bit. Michele

My first thought and the one I always held was that if the GB asked us to essentially drink the Koolaid, I'd be outta there. I thought that elder was an idiot. On another note, though. I was convinced that I'd not take a blood transfusion even if it meant my life so I guess I wasn't as smart as I thought I was. sharon It's easier to stay out than to get out ~ Mark Twain

Who presumably reached some sort of tipping point, said "enough is enough" or "I don't want to live like this anymore". What sort of tipping point did it take for each of us to leave (assuming those who were df'd mostly wanted out anyway, whether they knew it or not)? Surely less than "drinking the kool-aid". Then again, I find it's the little injustices, the assaults on our dignity, that gave us pause for thought; not the bigger issues like blood transfusions. From reading the stories here, most people who faced that (myself included) did in fact refuse the blood, only to rethink our position later when we realized we nearly died for some stupidity. So, obedience to a 'drink the kool-aid' command? I suspect most of us would have gone along with this when we were 'in', if the scenario was plausible or consistent with the JW-lalaland worldview. In other words, a WT that says "you're all drinking the kool-aid on this date" wouldn't have worked, but isolating everyone in assy halls or something, saying armageddon is imminent, then handing out the kool-aid, would have worked with most. I still wonder if there are any genuinely psychotic people in the upper echelons who might try to pull this off. We know they despise the little people already. Throughout my time as a baptised JW, I held a lot of things in reserve. I sometimes told my children things that didn't go along with the WTS teachings, to comfort them, because the bible studies sometimes scared them. I even thought that if one of my kids needed a transfusion, they'd get one. So, much as I openly followed the party line, I had my inner secrets. Those developed after I was baptized actually. I was a better JW just before I was baptized. So, I doubt I would have taken the koolaid, and wouldn't have let my kids do it either. I was talking to an elder once who talked about this very sort of thing. He said that there were things he would not do blindly, like he wouldn't sell everything and give it to the WTS, and he wouldn't enter into a suicide pact. He also said that the WTS would never, ever ask that of us. Who knows? Things change. But the org is big enough that it is not likely to happen on a big scale. The suicide cults have been groups who greatly isolated themselves and would do it all together. If that happened, it would be more likely to happen at one KH where some nutty elder had developed a following. Janet

I must be a relic of the past or something! I have NEVER heard of the poisoned drink thing! How awfully frightening that would have been to you Michele ... and anyone else subjected to such disgusting and totally irrational thinking! It's certainly not something my parents have ever mentioned or any of the other JW's I've known in Australia either. It's akin to what that awful Goebels (sp?) wife did to her own children in Hitler's bunker! I'm not one to swear ... but that's bloody sick! I'm not sure what would have happened if it was a scenario to contemplate with my family. I'd like to think my parents wouldn't have gone ahead with something so sick and dark as that poisoned drink thing. It's a body shuddering thought isn't it! I think Janet may well be right ... it sounds like isolated groups under the control of a dictator type. Goodness knows there's enough of them in that religion!

I wonder how many jws would actually do it or would their natural instinct to survive kick in with most of them. If you think about it, every jw who refuses a blood transfusion is, in effect, drinking the koolaid. That person is being told they may die without blood, yet they are choosing no blood and in many cases, they are choosing death. They readily accept death as the result of their "no'blood" policy, so to me it's not such a stretch to think they could drink the koolaid and do it willingly. Scarey stuff, that is! I wish my mother would get out of this cult.

Back when I was 12 ... my Mum had a blood nose that haemorrhaged for seven whole days. She refused a blood transfusion ... my Dad backed her and then of course the elders and their cronies moved in. They were like flies on the wall in the hospital and I already had massive doubts about the religion by that time! Although to this day my Mum is convinced she did the right thing and that because she's still alive WITHOUT blood ... the religious beliefs were justified ... I have no idea how I would have reacted had she died! There was a very real potential of that happening ... it would have meant my father was without a wife ... and her then four children would have been without a mother! Would she have taken that poisoned drink? I'd like to say no ... but she's already proven beyond a doubt that her religion was more important than her own children! Sad isn't it! My wish is for both my parents to get out while they still can. Having rekindled their faith of late ... especially my Mum ... I'd have to say my wish won't be coming true and that is a tragedy in itself. Hang in there Michele ... your Mum may finally see the REAL light!!!

I always thought secretly, "I'm sorry, but if they ask us to jump off a bridge, it's not happening." I totally got the corelation between that and refusing blood. I also felt that, deep down, I would want to accept a blood transfusion to save my life. But then I also struggled with the fact that I was so miserable, that I didn't really want to live anyway

Even as a teen, I would have done it out of fear of getting in trouble. But by the time I hit about 25, I believe they would have had to trick me to drink it. Oh... and I don't believe that I could have asked my children to drink it no matter what.
