Somewhere around the time I left JW's I heard this recitation written by Timothy Leary and brought to a new generation of listeners by the group Tool. I had already started 'thinking for myself' but I found myself quoting this quite a lot.

Although I may not question people's motives or agendas outright, preferring to give them the benefit of the doubt I always hold onto that little counsel I keep to myself, not to ever trust anybody completely, not even myself. As for big groupthinks I guess I mostly try to stand outside and if I agree with some things, OK, but I don't buy into anything totally and completely. For instance, although I agreed more with Obama than with McCain and voted for Obama, I would not be shocked or surprized by anything that comes out of the Whitehouse in the next 4 years (at least I don't think I would). I don't trust government completely and I'm totally turned off by anybody who tries to 'sell' spirituality to me.

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
