I personally think religion is a big joke. If there were a god who wanted to be worshiped, i think the god would have made its existence obvious and apparent its choice of how to be worshipped as easily identifiable. It sounds like what you need is a close-knit community. A higher purpose to work for and caring people to surround you are important in the search for meaning and happiness. This is why a lot of religious people are truly happy, but it's not a god that's blessing them, it's the fact that they feel hope for the future, have close friends and feel like they're working for a greater cause.
All of these things are available outside of religion. Try volunteering, joining a club or becoming politically active. All of these things are rewarding, and you'll meet like-minded people.
