Just to complicate matters, it turns out our daughter is 'gifted'. I've just read that one of the signs of 'giftedness' is that the child starts to read at 4 years of age. Our daughter started reading at 2, and is currently reading books designed for 6-year olds (she is now 3).Apparently, because of having an intellect well beyond their emotional age, many gifted children are socially awkward. Our daughter is very shy and finds social interaction extremely difficult (as do I actually). The JW lifestyle is only going to make that worse.

Most people don't believe us when we tell them she can read (they think she has just memorised her books), and of course she won't do it in public so we can't prove it! In fact she is more and more reluctant to read to us even, but when she does she astonishes us with her vocabulary. The other day she read a book with over 330 words in it, and only needed help with 8 of them (2 of which were names). Even when she doesn't know a word, she has a very good guess. She gets through 2 or 3 new books a week. I'm so proud of her!
