I saw the BS and instantly thought of the more 'worldly' interpretation Mak! Thanks for the giggle!

No offence Mak ... but it's not her conscience that is stopping her from reading books with content regarding birthdays, wizards etc ... it's her fear. Don't mix the two up mate. Knowing the difference between right and wrong is one thing ... but concluding the fact that birthdays are pagan, wizards are evil etc ... is nothing but religious indoctrination and fear.

The content your little cutie is exposed to during JW meetings is of an adult nature pure and simple. The artwork can be quite disturbing and the stuff of nightmares. I remember them well and I'm closer to 50 than 5. Imagine how she'll feel when the kids at school start on her about not going to birthdays, not dressing in a gorgeous fairy dress etc. Whilst I agree that some fairytales can be a tad on the violent side ... usually good outweighs evil and the stories themselves are fictional. It's why parents say 'oh it's just a story honey' when they read to their kids. You don't hear JWs saying 'it's just a story honey' to their kids! They're more likely to say 'now you know why you have to be a good little girl ALL the time honey'!

I'd be making sure she has more of the fun books ... there are hundreds of gorgeous, lighthearted books that are fabulous to help our little ones with their reading and with their imaginations! My boys have more books than we know what to do with ... when they were your daughter's age they loved (and still do) the Dr Seuss books ... the Mr and Little Miss books (Mr Smiley, Mr Strong, Little Miss Chatterbox etc) and of course the traditional folk and fairytales.
