This is a great question. I've often wondered the same thing, what's the most effective way to get a JW to see through all the nonsense that's been served up as "Truth". I think the UN issue might be useful. The UN issue could be a way to show that the people at the top of the org making the big decisions are not very smart. “Lets join the UN,” seriously who thought that would be a good idea? Also the pedophile issue. The main point of the pedophile issue is not the fact that there have been JW's who were pedophiles. This would be a pointless argument to say "There are JW's who have done horrible things, therefore they can't be the true religion." The main point to drive home is the fact that the organization protected the pedophiles because reporting them to the police would bring "reproach on Jehovah's organization." This is a big warning sign of a dangerous cult. The squeaky clean image to the public was more important than the rights of the individual members, even abused children. I think showing how cults work and the similarities with some of the practices of the JW's might also be effective. Most people don't know how cults work and don't realize that "mind control" can actually be quite subtle at times. You practically need a degree in psychology to effectively reason with a JW. Most people here would agree that if you say the wrong thing to a JW about the organization they will mentally shut down. I like to call this their mental wall, no rational thought can get past once it's been lowered. So the trick is to get in as much information as you can while they're willing to have a somewhat rational discussion.

Another tactic is to play dumb, just ask them to explain some of their doctrine simply as if you don‘t fully understand it. It's possible while explaining some of their odd beliefs a little doubt will set in the back of their mind. They are supposed to be teachers so ask them about paradise earth. If nobody dies but people can have children what about overpopulation? What about widowed JW’s who remarry before Armageddon comes? Won’t that be a little awkward for their first spouse when they wake up in the new system to find out they have to share their spouse with someone else for all eternity? What if someone doesn't want to obey Jehovah in paradise earth, will he then be murdered by Jehovah? Or will we go back to the practice of stoning the wrongdoer? If people won't grow old in the new system will the children remain a certain age forever? Or will their bodies age to same random number like 30 years old and then remain that age forever? Will we have electricity? Will there be cars or horse and buggies? What about accidents in paradise earth. If I’m playing with my pet tiger and he accidently nicks my jugular with his claw would I need to see a doctor? Since there will be no hospitals would the elders stitch me up or would the wound magically heal itself? I think the question of “accidents” in the new system could get a JW thinking. Will our bones no longer be able to break? Get them to explain why not. The only answer to a lot of these questions is, Magic. Someone may appear content giving you the answer of “Magic” but deep down some people will feel unsettled that they can’t come up with a logical answer. While attempting to explain this fantasy world a JW might realize how foolish it actually sounds. Hell why not ask them what color the sky will be in this fantasy world?     Will there be clouds, and if so will there also be hurricanes and tornadoes? If not, have them explain why.

This tactic of gently asking simple rational questions actually worked on helping me see through some of the "magical" beliefs I had. My older brother used this tactic on me. What I think was important was that he didn’t attack my beliefs, he just asked simple questions in a curious manner and allowed me to attempt to rationally explain this fantasy world of beliefs I had. I didn’t instantly abandon all my beliefs but a huge light bulb turned on which allowed me to see things clearer. I think it’s also important to remind yourself at best all you will be able to do is to get a JW thinking. These doubting thoughts about the “Truth” will possibly become cracks in the dam. Hopefully one day they will contribute to the whole dam breaking free.
