Is it that you no longer want to be known as a JW and that you no longer believe in it anymore?
Yes Michele, that's my understanding of why people wish to write such a letter...........it definitely is not imo saying that you don't want anything more to do with JW's, I know that all of us who have lost friendships because of leaving the religion truly wish that weren't so..........many of the JW's are good people who I am sure would jump at the chance to still mix with those who have left.....so long as it wasn't frowned upon!!

if only it was just a matter of accepting and respecting others beliefs, alas once you have the 'temerity' as the society sees it, to choose to extricate yourself from the religions clutches, it is they themselves who decide that you are therefore bad association, and should be shunned!!

If only there was such a thing as an 'unbaptism' - which allowed those of us who no longer believe the crap doled out, to go along and be 'undunked', thereby annulling our vows, yet still allowing us to go about our lives without the fear of shepherding calls or shunning.............I think we would all be forming an orderly queue

It reminds me of the old chestnut......."You can't fire me I already quit"
