Get it? Jehovah's Witnesses LIKE what they've got. No matter what a loser someone is on the outside, in the Kingdom Hall, surrounded by like believers they are somebody special. They cling to the promise that one day soon they will be winners. Everyone who is currently enjoying their life will be road kill. In the WTBTS' dogma those loyal to it get the last laugh. Not a puny inducement for people who've given up everything for the promise of everlasting life in the New World. (See the drawing?) Think of this: What do you have to offer them that can trump that?

Right. I think I like this.

People act in their self-interest within the restrictions imposed upon them by their situation. The act reinforces the belief that it is in their self-interest. An outsider can point out that the restrictions imposed upon them aren't in their self-interest, but due to all that reinforcement, the outsider's point feels like a threat to their self-interest.
