This is just an observation, so maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that liberalism/extremism has little to do with the beliefs themselves. 21st century catholics believe more or less the same thing they did a thousand years ago, but they're much more open to new ideas then they were then. It can go the other way too, Muslims are much more traditional now then they were a thousand years ago. (though there's some debate about that)

To show how quickly this can change take the teapartiers in the u.s. They have these quasi-religious (or outright religious) ideas about the constitution and the 'founding fathers', who were all secularists to begin with.

My point in all this is that if you take a given point in time, the jws may have extreme views and the catholics are moderate, but another thousand years from now (heaven forbid they last that long), the jws may be moderate and the catholics extremist. So to really have an honest comparison between two religions, you need to specify a certain point in history, since beliefs and reactions to those beliefs are constantly changing.
