Hi Exbetelita,

Actually my relationship with them was surprisingly warm. When the Christmas lights went up I am sure they were disappointed and felt they needed to act. The one elder who, I later learned, took the initiative in all this didn't surprise me. I am certain their decision to act without making any further contact was at the direction of legal department at HQs. So, I am sure, they knew I was serious and what they were doing was on the edge of what they could get away with legally. When I wrote to tell them I decided not to pursue legal action I am sure they were relieved.

The whole system creates a terrible distortion field for all involved, doesn't it? Some elders are nasty and power hungry, but I believe most want to do the right thing. Like other Witnesses they often wind up with conflicted loyalties trying to be helpful while at the same time feeling they must protect the reputation of the congregation and organization.

I have written several letters to SDB:SSY asking him if it would be possible for someone who no longer believes in the faith to leave without facing reprisals and without having to live according to the rules that govern active members. He has so far decided not to answer.

Cheers,
-Randy
