Alexia and Dis Spell, it may well be BOTH.

Although most R&F Witnesses are not fabulously wealthy, the Org does have a lot of dough and other holdings. From the posts I've read on here in the past, the Org has gotten pretty good at "getting around" the system where it can. Being a "religious" organization that is not mainstream, this can sometimes raise some eyebrows with government agencies.

Such cults also get extra attention when they exercise certain practices that most would deem harmful (the whole blood issue), seem to espouse "apocalyptic" beliefs (i.e. 1914, 1975, etc.), or appear anti-government or anti-American (no pledge of allegiance). Sometimes, when groups like these keep predicting, expecting and insisting time and again, "the End is near!" and it doesn't happen, folks get a little antsy and worried. You never know who might go all Jim Jones on everybody.
