I am the first to admit that I am not overly computer/internet savvy...........I get by usually..........I am not a great 'surfer' of the internet - which is probably just as well after last nights little escapade..............
Last evening I was online when all of a sudden a box popped up from Microsoft telling me that my computer was under attack from various Trojans, Virus's, worms etc.,..............
as I was taking that in,all of a sudden my document file was displayed, along with all my drives............they were flashing red with warning symbols - and there were counters under each one, with the red numbers rising as I watched, telling me how many virus's etc, had managed to invade my computer
I was in shock for a few moments as the numbers flashing were rising into the hundeds!!! Suddenly another Microsoft box popped up advising me to download a programme that would delete them all - otherwise my computer would crash in about 1 minute *eek*
I already have Norton Internet Security, and couldn't understand why it was not dealing with these attacks - but they were telling me that these were new virus's that had to have this new programme to get rid of them............
I decided not to download anything that I didn't recognise - but the box would not allow me to close it - it kept saying that if I closed it without downloading the programme, my computer would crash - so I couldn't exit to log off - I just decided to hit the computer-off button and take a chance.............
Luckily I did!!! when I re-booted and went into Norton, I saw that there had been a red alert attempt to attack my computer (which had been stopped by my security) and the threat was past - no action needed
When I went in for more info - I found out that this particular hacker uses this 'alarm' to get you to download their programme - which contains all the virus's etc., and once they are on your computer, they e-mail you telling you that for a substantial payment they can sort it out for you!!!!
I dare say that those of you who are more computer-savvy already know about this, but I just thought that for those like me, who trust the 'Microsoft' windows info box - it may be worth a warning.................
