I've never understood what was wrong with Thanksgiving. Plus, you know almost every witness family will buy a turkey around that time of year because they
go on sale...so they always have turkey dinner with pumpkin pie and the whole shabang. But of course, they would never say they are having Thanksgiving
dinner. Even if they have this dinner right on Thanksgiving.
So, I decided to look up the origins of Thanksgiving, and I found a really good video to explain all the origins:

The only thing I could pick out that they could possibly have a problem with, is that at one point along the timeline of establishing this holiday, they were also giving thanks for winnning a war. But seriously, that's not the point of Thanksgiving. I doubt anyone who has Thanksgiving dinner these days is like "hey...aren't you thankful we won that war in 1777?" The whole point of the holiday is to have a day of rest to spend with your family, and reflect on all you are thankful for.
I suppose the other thing they could have a problem with is when people would have days of fasting and prayer associated with the holiday. But again, that is not the first Thanksgiving of 1621. So, its not the true origins of the holiday. It's just something that people did along the way before the holiday got established, and became what we recognize it as today. Also, those were just called days of thanksgiving. They weren't a national holiday.
And even then, I don't see what the JWs could find wrong with a day of praying and being thankful to God. Their religion didn't going until 1872, so how can they say all previous religions were bad? Who were "God's chosen people" then? Why did "God's chosen people" just pop up around 1872? That never made sense to me either...but that's a whole different topic....
I think what gets to me the most is that when I ask a family member who is a JW, they have no idea what's wrong with the holiday (among other things). Their answer is unfailingly "well, there must be something wrong with it." Ummm ok...so prove it. I even told my aunt that I had done the research, and I told her what I found out. I hadn't found the above video, but I read about the original Thanksgiving of 1621. So I asked her what was wrong with it? Geez, I'd have a celebration too if half the colony died the first winter, and then we were able to get food and knew it would be a much better winter. Who wouldn't?
But they won't even think about it. They will just blindly accept that the GB aka Jehovah knows best. And the GB must have found something wrong, and that would disprove jebobah. Stupid borg bots. They make me so angry.
