My background is a nominally ethnically religious family, not ever being around "end is near" religious types, JW or otherwise. No friends or relatives of that variety. Never heard of the "rapture", etc.
However I was a little kid in Brooklyn Heights in the early 1960s. That's where JW headquarters is located, but we didn't have anything to do with them. Later we moved to the Lower East Side.
We had air raid drills at school during so-called peace time. We had the noon test of the siren at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, not far from our house. Presumably a military target. Yeah I thought about being killed in an atomic war all the time.
So when JWs came along with what is in fact the same old apocalyptic bullshit, I was a sucker for it. It wasn't so much a question of me wanting the whole wicked world destroyed, as expecting it anyway and not because the Bible said so. The JW come on seemed to make it all have a good reason. And a way past it.
That's not the whole story, but it gives you a good idea of my mindset at the time.
So now it's the 21st century. I'm still alive and civilization keeps muddling along. We're on the eve of destruction as usual. Thanks to Reagan, or Gorbachev, or Lech Walesa maybe. Or pure dumb luck.
But not Jehovah.
