It took a while for me to understand, but I can understand hitchens on this point somewhat.
Its fun, I like discussing this stuff/debating. Its never new material but the twists and turns arent always too predictable (although for the most part, they really are) and it enables you to get much literary practice.
Also I feel its necessary to write this... I have nothing against deists or theists, some of the people I love most are theists. I couldnt care less what religious beliefs someone holds as long as it isnt hurting anyone else. Im even ok if they are simply hurting themselves (as long as it isnt forced on anyone unwillingly). I do not want to disturb any religious believer, I dont care to, the world is big enough for everyone. If your faith helps you sleep at night or gives you hope, its very understandable and I wouldnt want to take that away from you.
The reason some of you might see me as hostile is because one thing I really dont like, are lies. Especially so when the lies are directed at something I hold dear. And one of the things I obviously hold dear is science. When someone tells me they believe in god because evolution doesnt 'splain where the first animal came from, I know its a complete lie. Thats not the reason they are a christian at all. They werent convinced by that argument, nobody has every been convinced by this argument. It is not a convincing argument and I challenge that noone can earnestly say they were convinced of theism because of this or any other anti-science anti-intellectualist bullshit. In reality they were convinced by an experience they had, they were born into a faith, they had a feeling that it was just right or they are afraid of death. I dont deny that they are many other reasons I am probably overlooking (those are the main ones I believe) but my point is, I do not believe anyone has every been convinced of religion by the denigrating of science. Its simply a non-sequitor. Even if every scientific fact we know is false, why is your religion the default? Seems a bit presumptuous if you ask me. What really happened is that they heard this argument used by some theologian or someone they respect and they thought it was a good argument. Im no expert on this but it sounds convincing to me, so it should to everyone else! I remember making that mistake before.
In high school I liked to preach to my friend. I heard the "all scripture is inspired" verse read out as an argument for why the bible is inspired. I didnt really understand it, but it seemed convincing. So when asked by my friend why I could trust the bible, I of course parroted what I heard... not really convinced by the argument myself. My friend took out a napkin, wrote something on it and handed it over to me. "This napkin says everything I say is correct and I say the bible isnt." I dont believe I conceded the point but I didnt argue, he was right and I knew it even if I couldnt admit it. It was circular reasoning and it made no sense to believe it just because it says so. Now im not saying this is analogous to what will happen to you when you become "enlightened" enough to be more like me. No,no, no im not that big a jackass even though some of you think I am. My point is, dont use arguments that arent convincing to you because they wont be convincing for anyone else. If you dont have a convincing argument, then perhaps you shouldnt assert that you do.
You keep your faith and dont deride science to promote it and Im happy to keep my lack of faith to myself. Sound like a deal? Nope, didnt think so
.
. If you havent noticed. Attack science to make yourself feel better about your unsubstantiated beliefs and I will explain thoroughly what I think about it and why. I think using such arguments is an incredibly petty act of desperation. If your belief is so convincing you need to rely on deriding other incredibly well substantiated ideas, your in trouble. And then the person is shocked when I firmly disagree. Really? And I must respect your anti-intellectual ideas as well? No thank you! I respect the person not the crazy idea he is presenting. To me respect is being honest, so I will be honest and say it how I see it.
I dont think this is unreasonable. How would you like it if when you asked me a scientific question my answer was "well the bible isnt right!" Its a stupid argument, right? So try to see it the other way around too

Atheists get a bad wrap and we are always out there having to defend ourselves. We seriously are one of the most hated group of people around today and for no good reason.
