Did anyone else use HBH (Home But Hiding) on those little slips we used to write on during field service? I know we used NH (Not Home), RV (return visit), CA ( call again), etc.. But the first time I saw HBH and a pioneer explained it to me, I cracked up from laughter because I thought it was a joke. However, at my hold Hall, it was used on a regular basis if someone could be clearly seen to be at home but didn't bother to come to the door, was peeking through blinds, etc. Was that something unique to the area I lived in or was it used by others? I'm just curious.

If they were in but not answering the door I just used to tick the terror-try slip as if they were in as I'd given a 'fine witness'(TM) by the very fact they saw me! (Urg!) I can't remember alot of details but a CO came in during the late 80s early 90s with those. The sheets were slightly bigger, they had almost a yahtzee score card feel to them and HBH was one of the terms at the top. You could also get the matching faux leather holder but we were to poor for that. Now did I ever use it? Yes. Once, when I was 11. I was very excited. I saw the householder leave his house after we were back in the car.

Sort of like putting two or three magazines in the doors of the "Not at Home" so you could up your literature placements for the month.

I heard Joel Engardio, who produced the documentary "Knocking" about JDubs (He was raised one but because he never got b'tized he and his mom have a nice relationship even though he's into the gay life) being interviewed. He shared about going door-to-door with his mom and knowing that people were "hiding". I recognized myself in that statement. Obviously we kids learned idea it from the adult JDubs. When you think about it, its as silly for the Wits to imagine that those who don't open the door to their bellringing are hiding as it is to open the door to strangers. You probably don't answer the phone for numbers you don't recognize. Is that hiding? No. Let 'em leave a message then you can decide if you care to make contact. We should be selective about who we open the door to. Why must the public answer the door to uninvited strangers? Witnesses and other peddlars come at THEIR convenience--not the ours! Under those circumstances is pretty nervy of them to acuse occupants of 'hiding'. What obliges householders, who have precious little time at home as it is, to have to respond to someone trying to earn their way to paradise by selling magazines? A bit after I became inactive, a sister knocked on our door...we didn't answer...the next thing I know she walks around the side of my house and starts knocking on my windows!!!! I still didn't answer and of course, felt that was extremely rude to do and not anyone's place to be knocking on all your windows peeking in!!! Geeze! Maybe I was flagged as HBH for the first time?
