I was raised a JW. Like you I was a ministerial servant, pioneer and I even went to MTS. I'm now 36 years old and have only recently managed a reasonably successful drift. I cannot imagine the emotional trauma you must have experienced, even though you have so eloquently described it. It is almost impossible to explain to someone who has not been a JW what it is like to be one, and especially to grow up as one. Nobody understands the extreme level of mind control. I've never had a problem with an organization dictating how you behave, every organization has codes of conduct. But when an organization actually controls not just what you think but also how you are supposed to FEEL, it is commiting a truly devious and corrupt crime. Your story is the best descriptions of being a JW that I have read. If ever I have a work colleague or other non-JW ask me what it is like to grow up as a JW, I shall simply sit them in front of a computer and ask them to read your story! This part of your article struck a cord with me 'I don’t have the foggiest idea what happens to me when I die. None. But I do know that I get this life, right here, right now. I am going to make the best of it. '. It required quite a bit of mental agility to leave behind the concept of living forever. Eternity was something I was really looking forward to. But once I had made peace with myself, I realized that NOT living forever gave me even greater reason to make the best of my life now. Thank you once again, Eric. Andria, maybe this could be moved to the 'Tell Your Story' section where it might receive more exposure and more reads? You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. Your account is about 98% exact to my life to the tee with the only exception being that you lost your sister to an early death as being your trigger point. Points that struck a cord with me were: Members are encouraged (a euphemism for forced)... And then it happened–for the first time in my entire life, I started to think. Like so many others before me, I’m happy to call myself a humanist. I finally know that my accountability isn’t to some god that can never be satisfied, but to myself, my family, my friends and my community. I don’t have the foggiest idea what happens to me when I die. None. But I do know that I get this life, right here, right now. I am going to make the best of it. Very well written. Quite frankly as brutally honest and also simply reflective of the actual unbiased reality of what growing up as a JW through childhood and young adulthood is actually like. The things we just accept until one day something happens that almost "forces" us to take a step back and we think from a different viewpoint...and then it's only a matter of time before the wheels fall off.
