Breast cancer follow up
I had breast cancer almost three years ago, was found to have the breast cancer gene mutation and had a double mastectomy and total hysterectomy because of it. My breast surgeon told me at the end that they got all the cancer, so I didnt' have to come back to see her anymore. What she didn't think to tell me was that I was supposed to follow up with an oncologist each year to due a blood test for the tumour marker indicator and mri's on the chest area to make sure the cancer doesn't come back. I was just at my regular doctor visit today and he said she had put a note in the file stating that I was to follow up in six months. Somehow I missed out on that information. So now I will be following up with an oncologist every year. I had wondered why others who had less cancer than me had to continue to follow up with their doctors, and I had a big cancer, though thankfully it hadn't spread. But I knew others who had real small cancers and they got it all, yet had to follow up each year. So now I will be doing so. I also now have to have a colonoscopy every three years since my brother just died of colon cancer and my dad had it, but they caught his in time, so I have two first degree relatives that have had it, and the doctor said there is a genetic component to colon cancer. Better safe than sorry.
