Back in March my kids signed me up (whether I was ready or not) for the Reach The Beach bike ride. I had been talking about it for a couple of years so they got tired of talk and wanted action! There were 4 start points and I was just going to start at the last point which was a 28 mile ride. They thought that was just a bit wimpy so signed me up for the 3rd start point which was 55 miles. So during the next 2 months I did as many training rides as I could (which I didn't think were near enough) and on May 16th I started my Reach The Beach journey. It was a slow start because I was having some troubles with my bike right off but the Bike Gallery was on hand and they got me fixed up and going. I left Amity around 10:30 in morning and made it to the next stop, Sheridan around noon. Then it was on to Grand Ronde for a lunch break. I really shouldn't have had the lunch because getting going again was harder and that was the point where the elevation climb started. I was nothing for the seasoned cyclist but for me it was a slog! Let me tell you though, when I finally came to that opening in the trees where I could see Haystack Rock I was so stoked! I was really pretty beat by then and it was still like another 13 miles or something like that. I rolled into Pacific City at 5:30. My rest stops added up to about 1 1/2 hours (was waiting for my other riding partners at Grand Ronde for an hour) so the total ride time for me was 5 1/2 hours. Plan to sign up next year and maybe do it from Newberg (83 miles). That was where my son started from and he made it too along with my future son-in-law and his friend who did the whole ride from Portland with the additional miles they did riding from home (106 miles!)
If I can find a way to post from facebook I'll post pics.
