A day of happy firsts......
Today I did some very "un-JW-like" things for the first time. I am scheduled for cataract surgery next week, so today I had to have a pre-op checkup at my GP, which consisted of an EKG and having blood labs drawn. The doctor asked me what she said was a very routine question for ANY surgery: "If you need a blood transfusion, would you be willing to allow us to administer it?" It was so strange to hear the words "sure I will" come out of my mouth and then sign the form to permit it. However I'm comfortable with that decision, although the chances of it actually being needed are almost nonexistent for this situation.
Later this evening I attended a resident's meeting in the apartment building where I live, and before the meeting began everyone was asked to stand up and recite the pledge of allegiance. I did it---no problem, but I did not engage in the opening prayer because I don't believe in the usefulness or necessity of prayer.
